Stanton Brothers Eggs in northern Boone County is the nation’s largest independent free range egg operation. The 1,400 acre farm west of Centralia has been in the Stanton family since 1845, and it’s well known in Missouri’s agricultural community. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg visited the Stanton farm in 2017. Dustin Stanton, who handles the sales and marketing side of the operation, joined host Fred Parry in-studio for the hour Saturday morning on 939 the Eagle’s “CEO Roundtable” program. Mr. Stanton, a former Boone County treasurer, tells listeners that hard work is the key to their success. He also discussed the milo that is fed to their chickens:
(LISTEN): Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri president Lindsay Lopez discusses hunger and Thanksgiving on “Wake Up Mid-Missouri”
With Thanksgiving less than a week away, the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri says more people than ever before are struggling. Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri president Lindsay Lopez says everything costs more today, adding that hunger is real and is prevalent in our community. She joined us live on 939 the Eagle’s “Wake Up Mid-Missouri”, telling listeners that anyone struggling who needs food should visit their new food bank market on Columbia’s Business Loop, which opened November 1. It’s near Firestone. Ms. Lopez says the food bank market served 350 families on opening day:
(LISTEN): Columbia’s city manager emphasizes continuity at CPD with Schlude pick
Columbia’s city manager says CPD assistant chief Jill Schlude is the best choice to serve as chief.
City manager De’Carlon Seewood announced Schlude’s selection this week at city hall. He tells 939 the Eagle that continuity is important to him with CPD.
“And it’s one of those things where when you look out and see exactly what we need in order to continue the continuity that we have and make sure the department moves forward, Jill outshined. And so I’m excited about her taking on the role of chief, and I think she’ll do a great job for the city,” Seewood says.
Mr. Seewood says 18 candidates applied for the position, and that list was narrowed to eight semifinalists and four finalists. Mr. Seewood tells 939 the Eagle that Schlude shined during the interview process.
“I think each one of the candidates had something something, but I think when you looked at Jill’s capabilities, looked at her experience, looked at how she responded to some of the questions that was proposed. She had a lot that can make sure the department (CPD) is constantly moving forward,” says Seewood.
The 46-year-old Schlude began with the Columbia Police Department in 2005 and has been with the department for 18 years. She’ll be sworn-in at the December 4 city council meeting. One of her priorities is police officer recruitment and retention: Columbia Police are currently 38 officers short.
Columbia physician charged with rape to go on trial in early December
A December jury trial has been set for a Columbia doctor charged with raping a woman he met last fall at the Black and Gold tavern on the Business Loop.
Boone County Circuit Judge Kevin Crane has scheduled a December 6 jury trial for 38-year-old Dr. Travis Birkhead, who’s charged with rape or attempted rape and misdemeanor assault.
939 the Eagle News has been at the Boone County Courthouse for several hearings in this case. Defense attorney Kevin O’Brien told Judge Crane in open court in January that the woman wouldn’t leave Birkhead’s house that night, saying she “went crazy.” O’Brien has told the court there was no sexual assault and that Birkhead was the one who called Columbia Police to ask the woman to leave his home. Boone County prosecutors disagree: they’ve told Judge Crane in open court that Dr. Birkhead is a danger to the community and that he has a history of threatening people. They’ve also said that Birkhead’s ex-wife, a different woman, is terrified of him.
Birkhead was released from the Boone County jail in May, after posting a $50,000 surety bond. He is hooked up to GPS monitoring, under Judge Crane’s order.
