Eight-term U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-St. Elizabeth) will be retiring in December, after 16 years on Capitol Hill. Missouri’s new third congressional district includes Columbia south of Broadway, Ashland, Hartsburg, Fulton, Boonville, California, Kingdom City, Holts Summit, Jefferson City, Linn and New Florence. It also includes Wentzville and O’Fallon. Former Boone County clerk Taylor Burks announced his run to try to replace Congressman Luetkemeyer, during a live interview on “Wake Up Mid-Missouri” this morning. Mr. Burks tells listeners that he’s the only candidate who’s looking at this race from mid-Missouri, and that the district should be represented by someone from central Missouri. State Sen. Mary Elizabeth Coleman (R-Arnold) and former State Sen. Bob Onder (R-Lake St. Louis) are also running. Mr. Burks criticized the redistricting process that drew the new boundaries, saying central Missouri “got sliced up by some jokers in Jefferson City.” National security is a top priority for Mr. Burks, who’s a veteran. He’s also touting transportation, saying service roads along I-70 from St. Louis to Columbia literally run out and that must change:

Columbia-based Veterans United wants to purchase former IBM building
The largest private employer in Columbia/Boone County wants to purchase the former IBM building on Columbia’s Lemone Industrial drive.
Columbia’s city council is scheduled to vote on a bill tonight to approve the $8.1 million sale to VU, which began in Columbia in 2002 with four employees. It’s now the third-largest employer in Columbia/Boone County and the largest private employer, with 3,474 employees, according the 2023 statistics from Columbia Regional Economic Development Incorporated (REDI).
City manager De’Carlon Seewood is recommending that the council approve the sale. The nine-acre site includes the 93,000 square feet building. It includes 721 parking spaces, 802 cubicles, 26 team rooms and a 32-seat training room. It also includes a 4,000 square foot tornado storm shelter, which IBM built.
Monday is Presidents’ Day, a federal and Missouri holiday
Most of Jefferson City’s approximately 14,000 state employees are off on this Monday to observe President George Washington’s birthday, also known as Presidents’ Day.
It is a federal, Missouri state and county holiday. Some cities, but not all, are also observing the holiday. Banks and financial institutions are closed today, and there will be no regular mail delivery. Regular mail delivery resumes tomorrow. City of Columbia spokeswoman Sydney Olsen tells 939 the Eagle that city offices are open today, and Columbia’s city council meets tonight.
Then-President Richard Nixon signed the Uniform Monday Holiday law in 1971, which changed the Presidents’ Day holiday to the third Monday in February. George Washington served as the nation’s first President, from 1789 to 1797. In his farewell address, President Washington warned the country about permanent alliances with foreign nations.
Washington’s birthday is one of Missouri’s 13 official state holidays.
(LISTEN): Longtime former Columbia Orthopaedic Group president Dr. Mark Adams appears on 939 the Eagle’s “CEO Roundtable”
Columbia Orthopaedic Group (COG) was founded in 1965 on Broadway in downtown Columbia. It started as a white frame house near Boone Hospital Center. COG built their current 72,000 square feet state-of-the-art facility at Broadway and Keene in 2008. The current facility includes an in-house ambulatory surgery center, doctor offices, exam rooms and an imaging center.
Longtime former Columbia Orthopaedic Group president Dr. Mark Adams joined host Fred Parry Saturday morning on 939 the Eagle’s “CEO Roundtable.” Dr. Adams, who served as COG’s president for 18 years, emphasizes their humble beginnings and growth. He notes the bedrooms in that 1965 white-frame house served as exam rooms. Dr. Adams tells listeners that COG today sees 700 visits each day, adding they have 27 physicians and more than 225 employees. Mr. Parry and Dr. Adams also discussed numerous other topics on the show, including the $10-billion merger between St. Louis-based BJC HealthCare and Kansas City-based St. Luke’s. Dr. Adams tells listeners that he sees the merger as an attempt to shift the power curve that exists in medicine. Dr. Adams says insurance has had pricing power for many years. They also discussed a number of benchmark developments in Columbia healthcare in the past 40 years, including Columbia Regional Hospital’s 1974 opening. Dr. Adams tells listeners that Boone was very crowded at that time, adding that Columbia Regional, which is behind the Moser’s on Keene and is now Women’s Hospital, essentially became an orthopaedic specialty hospital. Fred and Dr. Adams also reflected on three of COG’s founders: Garth Russell, Glenn McElroy and John Payne:
