Columbia’s school board will hear a report this evening from the superintendent about the recent state annual performance review.

Columbia Public Schools (CPS) Superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood tells 939 the Eagle that attendance issues contributed to CPS scoring 70 percent on the review. Dr. Yearwood says attendance is down since COVID and emphasizes that the district is increasing visits to homes and is also making more phone calls. He says CPS is also doing celebrations for students who attend class at least 90 percent of the time.

Dr. Yearwood will also address math in tonight’s report. He says that nationally, school districts have been impacted in math scores after COVID. CPS is expanding its tutoring opportunities in math.

Dr. Yearwood will also highlight positives in the report. He says the number of CPS students receiving advanced credit is high and that the district received nearly all available points in the area of continuous improvement, which is a newly-designated area.

Columbia business leaders will be choosing one of two major college towns for their leadership visit this fall.

This will be the Columbia Chamber of Commerce’s tenth trip. They visited College Station, Texas in October. Chamber president Matt McCormick tells 939 the Eagle they’re looking at two Big Ten college towns for this year’s trip.

“We actually have two cities on our docket that we’ve looked at. One is Madison, Wisconsin. The other is Lincoln, Nebraska. We always go to a university town, because there’s something special about a university town,” Mr. McCormick says.

The University of Wisconsin is located in Madison, and the University of Nebraska’s main campus is in Lincoln. Previous visits have included Ann Arbor, Tuscaloosa and Athens, Georgia.

“Homelessness is one of those issues that we know Madison has addressed a great deal, and so we’d like to learn from them what they’ve worked on,” says McCormick.

Columbia’s city council voted in February to approve a permit that allows for the construction and operation of a proposed 120-bed homeless shelter near Columbia’s power plant and former VFW post.

You’ll hear tornado sirens this morning in Columbia, Jefferson City, Fulton and across the state.

The annual statewide tornado drill will take place at 10 am, weather permitting.  NOAA weather radios will be activated, and Boone County’s Office of Emergency Management says Boone County will be activating the outdoor warning siren (OWS) system.

939 the Eagle and all of our mid-Missouri Zimmer stations will be participating. Mizzou will also be participating. The university’s system, which includes alert beacons in buildings across campus, text messages and social media postings, will be activated.

Schools, businesses and homes are encouraged to participate in the drill by discussing tornado safety and sheltering in place.

Record money raised for mid-Missouri’s Radiothon for Children’s Hospital

February 26, 2023 By Brian Hauswirth

The annual Radiothon to benefit the children and adolescents at Columbia’s Children’s Hospital has raised a record $260,013. The announcement was made Friday evening live on-air by Carson, who serves as Zimmer Communications’ program director.

Additional money that’s been raised is still being calculated.

The 17th annual Missouri Credit Union Miracles for Kids Radiothon was carried live on both Thursday and Friday on 939 the Eagle and four other Zimmer mid-Missouri stations. It was hosted by the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) and Zimmer Communications.

All of the money raised will remain in mid-Missouri to help pediatric and adolescent patients at Columbia’s Children’s hospital. MU Health Care’s Children’s hospital is mid-Missouri’s CMN hospital.

“Every penny counts”, Radiothon Zimmer organizer says

February 23, 2023 By Brian Hauswirth

We’ve received several $500 donations today during the 17th annual 939 the Eagle Radiothon. We’ve also received several donations for $1.

All of the money being raised will benefit the children at MU Health Care’s Children’s Hospital in Columbia. MU Health’s Kristin Fritschie tells 939 the Eagle that no donation is too small and that every penny counts.

All of the money that’s raised stays in central Missouri to help pediatric and adolescent patients at the hospital. 939 the Eagle and four other Zimmer stations are broadcasting live from 6 am to 6 pm today and Friday. Dr. Randy Tobler and news director Brian Hauswirth are live on-air from 3-6 on the Eagle.
