CPD seeking charges against Columbia shooting suspect

One person has been shot and one arrest has been made after a Monday evening incident at a trailer court near Columbia’s Business Loop and Cosmo park.

Columbia Police say the victim was transported to a local hospital. His condition has not been released.

ABC-17’s Marina Diaz reports nearly every CPD officer on-duty responded to last night’s shooting. CPD investigators have tweeted that 21-year-old Sean Colton of Columbia has been arrested, and police are seeking charges of domestic assault, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.

CPD’s Criminal Investigations division is still working the case.

Columbia Police Lt. Scott Alpers tells our news partner ABC-17 that there is no threat to the public at this time.

CPD identifies Columbia woman killed with claw hammer

The Columbia woman who was beaten to death with a claw hammer at a home on High Quest drive has been identified as Patricia Kelly.

Columbia Police made a positive identification on Thursday. It took several days, due to the severity of the victim’s injuries. Lieutenant Rick Horrell, who heads CPD’s criminal investigations division, is thanking everyone who came forward with information.

“We can now confirm that Patricia Kelly, 59, of Columbia, is the victim whose body was located by officers and hidden in the closet in the 1700 block of High Quest drive on October 10. We extend our condolences to Patricia’s family and friends, and our thanks to everyone involved in helping confirm her identity,” Lt. Horrell says, in a Twitter video.

The Columbia Police Department’s probable cause statement says her body was found under a rug inside a utility closet of a home, with a wheelchair on top of it.

37-year-old Adam Conner of Columbia has been charged with second degree murder in the case. He made his initial arraignment via video this week.

CPD is currently down 21 officers; Saturday open house planned

Saturday is your opportunity to take a close look at the Columbia Police Department’s BearCat SWAT vehicle and mobile command posts.

CPD plans an open house tomorrow from 10 am to 2 pm at its regional training center on Meyer Industrial drive. Columbia assistant police chief Jeremiah Hunter says representatives from the department’s SWAT team, criminal investigations division and K-9 unit will also be on-hand to discuss their roles and answer questions.

CPD also hopes the open house will assist in their ongoing recruitment drive. The department currently has 21 vacancies to fill, down from 23 in April.

Columbia Police chief Geoff Jones met with Governor Mike Parson in April at the Statehouse in Jefferson City to discuss recruitment and retention efforts. Chief Jones has said that the Columbia Area Career Center (CACC) will help improve CPD’s recruiting through youth career path training. Jones says having the career center will allow CPD to better prepare youth to be officers in this environment.

Columbia Police investigating shooting near Rangeline
