The National Weather Service (NWS) says Wednesday’s deadly tornado that killed five people in southeast Missouri’s Bollinger County was an EF-2 with estimated peak winds of 130 miles per hour.

Governor Mike Parson says his heart goes out to the families of the five victims and to everyone impacted.

“First of all, you know our thoughts and prayers go out with the families. And then for the whole community to have to rebuild back up, there’s a lot to work to do down there but again it shows the best of Missourians coming together to help each other out in some of the most difficult times,” Parson says.

The governor also praises the work of first responders and utility crews on the ground. Parson says his administration will continue to use all available state resources to assist throughout the recovery process.

Meantime, the American Red Cross has opened a shelter in southeast Missouri’s Marble Hill to assist those impacted by Wednesday’s deadly tornado. The Red Cross is providing food and water and cots for those who need a place a sleep. Governor Parson tells 939 the Eagle that he appreciates President Joe Biden’s phone call after the tornado:

“He called and just wanted to know that if there was anything they could do to help, whatever those resources would be, he offered that for me as governor. And wanted to make sure and relay to the people down there, appreciated the work they was doing,” Parson says.

Missouri state troopers say 87 structures in Bollinger County have been damaged, with 12 of those destroyed.

Heavy law enforcement presence near Jefferson City on Wednesday is part of training exercise

February 15, 2023 By Brian Hauswirth

Boone County’s Office of Emergency Management and other mid-Missouri law enforcement agencies are alerting motorists that they will see a high volume of first responders near Highways 63 and 54 in northern Jefferson City this afternoon.

It’s all part of a hazardous material training exercise, and will take place from 1-4. The Columbia fire department, Jefferson City fire department, Holts Summit fire department and the Cole County Sheriff’s department are just a few of the agencies that will be participating today.

You’re being asked to not call 911, unless you’re reporting an actual emergency. The training will take place in the old Cedar City neighborhood, and the Boone County Office of Emergency Management says it’s open to the public.

Missouri DPS: cause of Wooldridge fire is still under investigation

October 27, 2022 By Brian Hauswirth

The Cooper County Fire Protection District and other local agencies are still investigating to determine what caused Saturday’s massive wildfire in the Wooldridge area.

Missouri Department of Public Safety (DPS) deputy director Kevin Bond tells 939 the Eagle that the investigation continues.

“That’s being done on the local level in conjunction with (state) fire marshal’s office. And so that investigation is still ongoing and there’s not been a release on cause of (the) fire yet,” Bond says.

Mr. Bond is a former Pettis County sheriff. He joined Governor Mike Parson, U.S. Rep. Vicky Hartzler (R-Harrisonville), Senate Majority Leader Caleb Rowden (R-Columbia) and first responders for Wednesday’s Wooldridge tour. Smoke permeated the area during the tour.

Numerous state departments were involved in Saturday’s massive wildfire in Cooper County, ranging from the Missouri State Highway Patrol to the state Department of Conservation. DPS deputy director Bond tells 939 the Eagle that DPS had many of its personnel in Wooldridge, on I-70 and in Jefferson City.

“The state fire marshal’s office, SEMA (State Emergency Management Agency), the Missouri State Highway Patrol, lots of our agencies were actively involved in this situation. We activated the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) there in Jefferson City, not only for this fire but also for other fires and other events that were going on across the state,” says Bond.

The State Emergency Operations Center is housed at Jefferson City’s Ike Skelton facility. Mr. Bond reiterates what Governor Parson told reporters in Wooldridge: that closing I-70 on Saturday for two hours was done for safety reasons due to zero visibility at the I-70 Rocheport bridge.
