(AUDIO): Look for flights from Columbia to Charlotte in next year or so, according to business leader

Daily service from Columbia Regional Airport (COU) to Charlotte is still in the works, according to Columbia Regional Economic Development Incorporated (REDI) president Stacey Button.

She joined host Fred Parry in-studio for the hour Saturday morning on 939 the Eagle’s “CEO Roundtable.”

“So we are still working with American Airlines, who’s just been an absolutely great partner. They like other airlines are still stabilizing their markets. But we do fully expect to add Charlotte in the coming I’d say year, year-plus,” Button tells listeners.

Ms. Button says American Airlines made a pre-pandemic commitment to provide twice-daily service from COU to Charlotte. Columbia Regional Airport has received a federal grant to assist with the startup for that service.

Button also praises COU’s $23-million new terminal. Former Mayor Brian Treece has noted what a great front porch it will be for the University of Missouri and for people visiting Columbia for the first time. The new terminal is 52,000 square feet, compared to the 16,000 square foot terminal that was built in 1968. Button also says a new parking lot at COU has just opened. She tells the “CEO Roundtable” that other improvements at the airport are planned.

“We will be renovating a smaller building that exists just south of the terminal, and that’s going to be for a rental car facility,” says Button.

You can listen to host Fred Parry’s full interview with Button and REDI entrepreneurship coordinator Jay Sparks here.

Treece, Buffaloe see bright future with new COU terminal

A former Columbia mayor describes Columbia Regional Airport’s (COU) $23-million new terminal as a six-year project that culminated with the recent ribbon-cutting ceremony and first flight.

Former Mayor Brian Treece is proud of this project.

“It’s really due to no small part to the partnership between local, state and federal government, our two U.S. Senators, Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler, the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) but also MoDOT (Missouri Department of Transportation) and the taxpayers of Columbia,” Mr. Treece says.

Treece tells 939 the Eagle that his first vote in April 2016 was one asking voters to increase a hotel tax for economic development. Columbia voters approved that 2016 hotel tax, and it’s the new terminal’s main funding source. He says the new terminal is better than you can imagine. Treece notes the new terminal is 52,000 square feet, compared to the 16,000 square foot terminal that was built in 1968.

“And it really dramatizes how tired our current and now former (COU) terminal is. And what a great front porch this is going to make for the University of Missouri, for people that are visiting Columbia for the first time to see family or friends or visit a doctor. Or to maybe locate a new business here or send their daughter or son to college here,” says Treece.

Missouri Governor Mike Parson predicts the new terminal will help make Columbia a top medical destination. Current Columbia Mayor Barbara Buffaloe agrees. She describes COU’s new terminal as eye-opening.

“So we have the opportunity here already with our regional medical destination but also we have the research that’s now happening with the University of Missouri Health Care System to bring people in from other states, other cities to come here. So we do have that potential,” Treece says.

COU will use the old terminal to house car rental counters until the project’s second phase is finished.

A former Columbia mayor will be sworn-in as a highway commissioner this (Tuesday) morning at the Statehouse in Jefferson City.

Missouri Governor Mike Parson has appointed Brian Treece to the state Highways and Transportation Commission, and the governor will be hosting the 10:30 swearing-in ceremony in the governor’s office.

Mr. Treece served as Columbia’s mayor from 2016 until this spring and says good people can work together to make great things happen. He cites the massive $240-million new I-70 Rocheport bridge project, which is underway.

Treece describes the Rocheport bridge project as a generational investment.

Mr. Treece tells 939 the Eagle that he’s excited about his new bipartisan and statewide role. He notes the commission is not just about highways, and that it also involves airports, railroad and mass transit. He’s also emphasized the importance of connecting urban and rural Missouri.

The state Highways and Transportation Commission is a six-member board that governs MoDOT.
