Bowl eligibility is on the line Friday for Mizzou’s rivalry game against Arkansas

The Mizzou Tiger football team is playing for more than a 180-pound trophy on Friday afternoon in Columbia against Arkansas: they’re also playing for bowl eligibility.

Eli Drinkwitz’s Tigers are 5-6 this year, with a 2-5 record in the SEC. If Mizzou beats the Razorbacks, they’ll finish the regular season 6-6 and will earn a bowl bid for the third straight year. If they lose, their season is likely over.

The game is known as the Battle Line Rivalry game, presented by Columbia-based Shelter Insurance. The Battle Line Trophy is huge: it’s more than four feet tall and weighs more than 180 pounds. Mizzou has won five of the last six in the series, which dates to 1906.

Friday’s game kicks off at 2:37 at Faurot Field, and will be broadcast nationally on CBS by Tom McCarthy and former Colorado coach Rick Neuheisel. It will also be broadcast live on the Central Bank Tiger Radio Network by Mike Kelly, Howard Richards and Chris Gervino. Pregame coverage on Zimmer Central Bank Tiger Network affiliates KCMQ (FM 96.7) and KTGR (FM 100.5) begins at 12:30.

It’s the second weekday home game this year for Mizzou. Their season opener was on September 1, a rare Thursday night game. The Tigers beat Louisiana Tech 52-24 that night.

45,000 Mizzou football fans expected at tonight’s game at Faurot

Mizzou athletic officials are projecting about 45,000 fans for tonight’s (Thursday) season opener at Faurot Field in Columbia. The Tigers will battle Louisiana Tech at 7 pm.

Traffic is expected to be very heavy around Memorial Stadium and around campus this afternoon, especially around rush hour. University officials want all employees who work in non-public-facing roles to leave campus at noon today, and to work remotely after that.

This does not apply to MU Health Care employees, who must report in-person for work.

There will be limited paid public parking in Lot R by Truman’s Landing starting at 1 pm. That is $35 cash-only. Tickets are still available for tonight’s game, and Faurot Field hill tickets are also on sale for $10 each.

Mizzou’s athletic director is encouraging Tiger football fans to download the Mizzou Tigers app before you arrive on-campus for tomorrow (Thursday) night’s season opener at Faurot Field.

Desiree Reed-Francois spoke to our Zimmer sister station Clear-99.

“The mobile app will do everything from push notifications if one gate is more backed up than another. To also you can use your app … because it’s a night game we get to have a cool kind of app show if you will, a light show. And that will be through your app,” Reed-Francois says.

Meantime, complaints from Mizzou football fans about long lines at concession stands have prompted some changes this year at Faurot. Reed-Francois says you’ll need to download the new app to take part.

“So we’re experimenting with some mobile ordering. You can order and then you can go pick up your food in your locker, and we’re really looking forward to seeing how that goes,” she tells Clear-99.

Reed-Francois has also announced that there will be a flyover at Faurot Field for every football game this year, including the opener. There will also be skydivers during tomorrow’s pregame.

Mizzou opens the 2022 season Thursday night at 7 against Louisiana Tech.

University of Missouri officials are encouraging Mizzou football fans to park in downtown Columbia garages for tomorrow’s (Thursday) opener and to take a free greenway shuttle to the game.

Go COMO will begin downtown routes to Faurot starting at 4:30 tomorrow afternoon, and there are several places where you can be picked up. They include the Seventh street armory, the 5th and Walnut parking garage, Harpo’s, Shiloh Bar and Grill and Flat Branch. Go COMO will be running two downtown routes.

Columbia Public Works says the buses will operate on a ten-minute cycle, dependent on traffic.

Return trips will start at the end of the third quarter, and the last pickup will be 30 minutes after the game ends.

Tomorrow night’s kickoff between Mizzou and Louisiana Tech is set for 7. The University of Missouri is asking all employees who work on-campus in non-public-facing roles to leave campus at noon tomorrow.

Mizzou’s athletic director pushed for Thursday night season opener

Mizzou’s athletic director says football fans wanted another night game this year, adding that the opener against Louisiana Tech gives the school seven home games in 2022.

Athletic director Desiree Reed-Francois tells our Zimmer sister station Clear-99 that opening on a Thursday night is a huge opportunity.

“You know I came from Virginia Tech (Blacksburg) before UNLV and Coach (then-coach Frank) Beamer really made his mark on Thursday nights. And I love the opportunity of being early,” Reed-Francois says.

She’s excited abut the Tiger football team opening its season on a Thursday, as opposed to a traditional Labor Day Saturday.

“I’ve heard a lot about people going to the Lake for Labor Day weekend. And I thought we really want to have a great home atmosphere so how can I best help our football program have that great home atmosphere. And so Thursday night, it will be really fun,” Reed-Francois tells Clear-99.

Faurot Field hill tickets are now on sale for Thursday night’s game. Mizzou athletics says Hill tickets are $10 and will also be available for walk-up sales on Thursday.

Traffic is expected to be heavy in Columbia on Thursday afternoon and early evening. Mizzou says there will be limited paid public parking on-campus in Lot R by Truman’s Landing on Thursday, starting at 1 pm. The cost is $35 cash-only. Mizzou football fans are also being encouraged to park in downtown Columbia garages, which will be free on Thursday after 5. You can take a free shuttle to Faurot Field.

Thursday night’s kickoff is set for 7 at Faurot. Mizzou will be opening its 132nd season of college football. You can hear the game on the Central Bank Tiger Radio Network on Zimmer affiliates KCMQ (FM 96.7) and KTGR (FM 100.5), and it will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
