Columbia-based MidwayUSA began as a small gun shop in 1977 and has grown into a large company and internet retailer of about 200,000 hunting, fishing, shooting and outdoor products. Midway USA founder Larry Potterfield joined host Fred Parry in-studio for the hour Saturday on 939 the Eagle’s “CEO Round Table.” Mr. Potterfield discussed the company winning its third Malcolm Baldrige national quality award, and he also outlined plans to build a new 130,000 square foot office building on Midway USA’s new campus at 40 and Route J, near Rocheport:
Veteran Missouri lawmaker Basye accepting new position with area congressman’s office
A veteran mid-Missouri state lawmaker who’s served as the powerful Missouri House Elementary and Secondary Education Committee chairman has accepted a new position.
State Rep. Chuck Basye (R-Rocheport) is finishing his fourth and final House term, due to term limits. He says he’ll finish his term, which expires on December 31. Basye will be working for U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-St. Elizabeth).
“I’ll be working in his office starting in January,” Basye tells 939 the Eagle.
In addition to serving as chairman of the House education committee, Basye also serves on the Joint Committee on Education. His primarily rural district includes parts of Columbia, along with Harrisburg, Higbee and Renick.
Congressman Luetkemeyer’s sprawling district includes parts of Columbia, as well as Jefferson City, Fulton and Linn.
Memorial is emphasized in Jefferson City Memorial Airport name
Organizers of last weekend’s “Fly into the 40s event” at the Jefferson City Memorial Airport say it’s a prime example of how much Jefferson City and central Missouri cares about veterans.
Weather was perfect for the event, which drew a strong turnout. That pleases Veterans United Home Loans (VUHL) vice president Pam Swan, who worked on the event for more than a year.
“We got city people from Jefferson City. We brought in the appropriate people to talk about what this year’s mission would look like. What do we need to execute,” Swan says.
Veterans from all generations had an opportunity to take a free flight in a Stearman biplane. While many of the veterans were from Jefferson City and central Missouri, others traveled from as far as as southeast Missouri’s Bootheel.
Columbia-based VUHL is thanking everyone who participated in the fly-in. Ms. Swan is pleased that Jefferson City officials emphasize that the airport’s name is Jefferson City Memorial Airport.
“This airport when you look around and you look around in this hanger, it is themed in an honor to all of our service members, from past and present and hopefully into the future,” says Swan.
The Jefferson City Memorial Airport terminal was dedicated in 1966 in memory of Jefferson City residents who died while serving in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Then-Mayor John Christy and then-airport manager William Asel pushed for the honor roll plaque in the terminal. It’s still on the wall today.
The airport itself was built in 1947. Its directly across the Missouri River from the State Capitol building.
Mizzou food drive is underway; canned fruits and vegetables needed
Organizers of today’s annual Tiger food drive at Mizzou are hoping for donations of peanut butter, canned meats and canned vegetables.
The food drive began this morning at the Reynolds alumni center. Organizers are also hoping for canned fruit and canned soups today, along with canned chili.
The food drive assists the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri and the Tiger pantry on-campus. The pantry provides food resources to members of the Mizzou family and MU Health Care workers in need.
