Missouri’s governor says about 350,000 people attended the August state fair in Sedalia, which is about a two-and-a-half percent increase from 2022.

Governor Mike Parson praises the numbers, saying that no other event showcases Missouri agriculture like the state fair.

The governor says the carnival midway was a popular destination, recording its second-highest year for revenue, with the first Saturday, Monday and Tuesday being the biggest days on record. Governor Parson also says one of the main reasons why guests attend the fair is because it is a tradition for their family.

The state Department of Agriculture (MDA) says the agriculture showcase, family-friendly attractions, fair food and drink and shopping also ranked high on why fairgoers traveled to Sedalia in August.

U.S. Sens. Josh Hawley and Eric Schmitt, at least four other members of Missouri’s congressional delegation, Governor Parson and numerous other elected officials are in Sedalia for this morning’s  governor’s ham breakfast, which is a sellout.

The state Department of Agriculture (MDA) tells 939 the Eagle that all 1,000 tickets have been sold. Lieutenant Governor Mike Kehoe tells 939 the Eagle that the breakfast highlights Missouri’s farmers and ranchers.

“It’s a great statement of who we are as a state, an agrarian state, agriculture being our number one industry. It’s just a fantastic event”

“Time after time again I’m there and I meet somebody who says I’ve never been here before, I can’t believe this. It’s well worth the trip,” says Kehoe.

(AUDIO): Major crop losses are possible, with central Missouri’s drought

June 23, 2023 By Brian Hauswirth

The National Weather Service (NWS) St. Louis office’s latest drought map shows much of mid-Missouri remains in an extreme drought (June 22, 2023 graphic courtesy of NWS St. Louis Twitter page)

The National Weather Service (NWS) office in St. Louis says much of mid-Missouri remains in an extreme drought, which could lead to major crop or pasture losses. Water shortages are also possible.

Missouri Lieutenant Governor Mike Kehoe (R) describes the drought as horrific. His farm is located in Phelps County, near Rolla.

“We didn’t get a drop of measurable rain down in our part of central Missouri in the month of April, which is unheard of. And that’s when grass really gets most of its moisture to grow for hay,” Kehoe says.

Lt. Governor Kehoe says there were also two droughts last year at his farm in Phelps County. He notes agriculture remains Missouri’s top industry, with a $93.7 billion impact.

Mr. Kehoe is also warning farmers and ranchers about scams involving hay sales. The state Department of Agriculture (MDA) is warning about similar scams. Lt. Governor Kehoe tells 939 the Eagle’s “Wake Up Mid-Missouri” that some of the scammers are using professional-looking Facebook pages.

“You call them and what they say seems reasonable, a little bit reasonable. They say, hey you pay for the hay when we get to your farms. Everybody says, well that sounds good. You just got to give me a credit card to pay the trucker, that’s the person I’ve got to pay up front,” says Kehoe.

Kehoe tells listeners that a friend of his in mid-Missouri’s Wardsville was almost scammed. MDA is also warning farmers, saying they’ve received reports from producers who paid for hay upfront through a wire transfer, only to have no hay delivered. Kehoe and the Department both urge you to consider purchasing from someone you know, if possible. You’re also encouraged to view the hay in-person before any exchange of money.

Missouri’s Ashcroft worried about growing hunger needs in state

August 19, 2022 By Brian Hauswirth

Missouri’s GOP secretary of state is warning that the hunger problem is getting worse. Jay Ashcroft helped pack meals this week at the state fair in Sedalia.
