NWS says unexpected rain has limited snow totals in Columbia

January 25, 2023 By Brian Hauswirth

The National Weather Service (NWS) in St. Louis says unexpected rain has limited snow totals in Columbia and Jefferson City (January 25, 2023 graphic courtesy of NWS St. Louis Twitter)

The National Weather Service (NWS) says rain lasted longer than expected overnight along the I-70 corridor in mid-Missouri, significantly limiting snow amounts in Columbia and Jefferson City.

NWS St. Louis meteorologist Marshall Phfahler says additional snowfall of less than an inch is possible across the region today. Heavier snowfall is reported overnight in the Moberly and Mexico areas, as well as in Rolla and along the I-44 corridor.

The NWS’ winter weather advisory expires at noon today in mid-Missouri.

Some roads are still slick in areas, so you’re urged to slow down this morning. Boone County Joint Communications tells 939 the Eagle that a semi overturned on I-70 in Columbia at about 12:30 this morning. It happened on eastbound I-70 at the 133-mile marker. The truck driver sustained minor injuries, according to troopers.

Cement truck driver killed in crash near Columbia

January 17, 2023 By Brian Hauswirth

A one-vehicle crash Monday afternoon involving a cement truck on Route Z near Columbia has killed the truck driver.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says 22-year-old Troy Boshears was pronounced dead at the scene about 20 minutes after the crash, which happened at 12:20 on Monday. The victim is from mid-Missouri’s Paris, which is east of Moberly.

State troopers say Mr. Boshears traveled off the right side of Route Z, re-entered the highway and then traveled off the left side of the road before overturning. The cement truck came to rest on its top.

(AUDIO): StorageMart President Mike Burnam appears on 939 the Eagle’s “CEO Round Table”

December 4, 2022 By Brian Hauswirth

Former Boone County commissioner Fred Parry, who hosts 939 the Eagle’s “CEO Round Table”, describes Columbia-based StorageMart as a home-grown success story. StorageMart was founded in Columbia in 1999 , and its first location was on Rangeline. It’s now the world’s largest privately-owned storage company and operates in 18 states, six Canadian provinces and in the United Kingdom. StorageMart president Mike Burnam, a Moberly native, joined Fred in-studio for the hour Saturday on the “CEO Round Table.” They also discussed the revitalization of Columbia’s Parkade Center, and reflected on some of the old stores and restaurants that used to be there, including JCPenney, Goldies, the Flaming Pit and a pet store:

Murder conviction upheld in high-profile mid-Missouri case featured on ABC’s “20/20”

An appeals court has upheld a mid-Missouri man’s murder conviction in a high-profile case that received national media attention. The case has ties to Moberly, Mexico, Columbia and Jefferson City.

The Western District Court of Appeals has upheld the first degree murder and armed criminal action convictions against James Addie, a former Moberly Correctional Center employee.

Addie was convicted of killing Molly Watson, his secret fiancée. Watson was shot to death execution-style along a dusty road near Middle Grove in 2018. Middle Grove is a farming community east of Moberly.

At the time of the murder, Addie had been married for 22 years to a teaching assistant in Audrain County. Prosecutors say Addie was living two lives: one as a married man and father who worked at the prison, and the other with a secret fiancée planning a wedding at Columbia’s Stoney Creek Inn.

Addie’s April 2021 trial was moved to the Cole County Courthouse in Jefferson City on a change of venue. It was broadcast live nationwide on Court TV.  Addie blasted his own attorney in court at the end of the trial, saying his defense attorney had been ineffective. Addie also suggested in open court that Molly Watson may have had a stalker.

Addie’s case was also profiled in January during a two-hour special on ABC’s “20/20.” ABC had crews in Jefferson City for the trial, and they also traveled to Moberly, Mexico and the Middle Groves areas to conduct numerous interviews.

Mid-Missouri’s winter weather advisory runs through noon Tuesday

Columbia, Ashland, Moberly, Fayette and much of the listening area remain under a winter weather advisory through noon today (Tuesday).

National Weather Service (NWS) St. Louis meteorologist Jared Maples tells 939 the Eagle that the system started as rain last night in Columbia, before changing to a rain/snow mix and then to all snow.

“We did see accumulations overnight generally one to two inches on elevated and grassy surfaces. There are some thin areas of slush on some roadways,” Maples says.

He says ground temperatures last night were in the 40s, which helped. He’s urging you to be cautious when you drive to work this morning.

“It’s not going to be running at the clip that we saw earlier this morning and later last night, but nonetheless be advised that you could still run into some areas where you might pick up to maybe a half-inch to as much as an additional inch in that advisory area,” says Maples.

Keep your radio tuned to 939 the Eagle for updated weather forecast information.
