Missouri’s 54th governor is back in Jefferson City for today’s 1:30 unveiling of his official portrait. It will take place in the Missouri Capitol Rotunda. Former Governor Matt Blunt (R) was elected governor in 2004 at the age of 33, making him the second-youngest governor elected in state history. He served as governor from 2005-2008 and was secretary of state before that, serving from 2001-2004. He beat then-Missouri House Speaker Steve Gaw (D-Moberly) in the secretary of state’s race in 2000. He narrowly defeated then-Auditor Claire McCaskill (D) in Missouri’s 2004 gubernatorial race. Missouri Governor Mike Parson hosts today’s 1:30 portrait unveiling. Parson deputy chief of staff Kelli Jones tells 939 the Eagle that they’re expecting a crowd of about 50 people, which include Governor Parson, former Governor Blunt and his family and Lt. Governor Mike Kehoe. Former Governor Blunt joined us live on 939 the Eagle’s “Wake Up Mid-Missouri”, telling listeners that he’s seen a photo of the portrait and that he’s impressed. He says one of his best memories as governor was his wife Melanie having their first child in 2005, William Branch. Governor Blunt also says tragedies bring out the best in people, reflecting on his memories of Missourians dealing with tornadoes and floods:
Arraignment set for today for Jefferson City woman charged with multiple sex crimes
A Jefferson City woman charged with statutory rape and statutory sodomy involving a student was a parent volunteer at Lighthouse Preparatory Academy.
41-year-old Jennifer Cecil is charged with four felonies: statutory rape and sodomy, sexual contact with a student and sexual abuse. Cole County prosecutor Locke Thompson tells 939 the Eagle that Cecil will be arraigned this (Friday) morning. A Cole County judge describes Cecil as a danger to the community, and she remains jailed without bond at this time.
Lighthouse Preparatory Academy describes itself as a faith-based University model school. They’ve released a statement, which says Lighthouse is committed to the safety and well-being of their students at all times.
The statement says Lighthouse was notified about misconduct allegations regarding a parent volunteer, adding that school officials and outside authorities were notified. Lighthouse says it will fully cooperate with any forthcoming investigation as school policies and procedures are being reviewed.
If Cecil is convicted of the current charges, she would face a lengthy prison sentence and would be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of her life.
NTSB issues preliminary report into deadly plane crash at Lake of the Ozarks
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released a two-page preliminary report into last Thursday’s deadly plane crash in Osage Beach. The crash killed the pilot and one passenger.
The NTSB report says the agency’s examination of the crash site’s wreckage did not reveal any preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airframe or the engine that would have precluded normal operation.
The NTSB says the flight’s purpose was to take two passengers on a flight around the Lake of the Ozarks to view scenery. Shortly after the plane took off, witnesses say the airplane’s tail was lower than the nose. Witnesses say the plane “banked” to the right and impacted a heavily-wooded area. The NTSB says those witnesses did not report any abnormal noises coming from the plane.
The crash happened just before noon that day, and the weather was dry. The crash killed 22-year-old Hayden Michael Ritchhart of Carrollton and 19-year-old Evan Vandiver of Richmond. It also seriously injured a 54-year-old passenger.
The NTSB says the pilot flew the plane from its home base in northwest Missouri’s Carrollton to the Grand Glaize Osage Beach airport last Wednesday morning. The plane did not refuel at the Osage Beach airport, according to the report. The plane crashed on Thursday morning at about 11:55, shortly after takeoff.
The NTSB’s investigation continues.
