A Columbia activist believes the mayor and four city council members violated a state election law that prohibits elected officials from using public resources to advocate for a ballot issue. He’s filed a complaint with the Secretary of State. Anthony Willroth appeared on 93.9 The Eagle’s Columbia Buzz program Sunday morning. Willroth said he wanted council members’ vocal support of councilman Nick Knoth from the city council dais investigated by an agency independent of the city. Knoth is facing a recall election.

State Rep. Cheri Toalson Reisch from Hallsville, who’s district covers much of rural Boone County, was not happy to learn that Boone County commissioners called an election for April on a proposal that would freeze property tax increases on the primary residence of senior citizens. Toalson Reisch has been working on a petition drive to get a similar proposal on the ballot in August or November. In an interview Sunday morning on 93.9 The Eagle’s Columbia Buzz program, Toalson Reisch said she doesn’t like the language in the county commissioners’ proposal, which allows for the specific details of the proposal to be decided after the election.
(LISTEN): Boone Health CEO says hospital committed to remaining independent
The CEO at Boone Health said the hospital’s business grew in 2023 and its finances are improving. Brady Dubois took over as CEO of the county’s health care organization in November. He said continued growth will be very dependent on the hospital’s ability to expand it’s workforce, in an interview Sunday morning on 93.9 The Eagle’s Columbia Buzz program. He also said hospital trustees are not seeking to merge with another hospital and are committed to remaining independent.

“Missouri Times” publisher Scott Faughn will be the guest speaker at the February 19 Cole County Lincoln Days event at Jefferson City’s Capitol Plaza Hotel. Dinner begins at 6 that evening, and U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-St. Elizabeth) and a number of state lawmakers are also expected to be there. Mr. Faughn joined us live this morning on 939 the Eagle’s “Wake Up Mid-Missouri.” We discussed the dinner, the Freedom Caucus controversy with Missouri Senate President Pro Tem Caleb Rowden (R-Columbia), and legislation from State Rep. Cheri Toalson Reisch (R-Hallsville) that would allow charter schools to operate in the Columbia Public Schools (CPS) district, without local school board sponsorship. Scott also addressed the Magnitude 7 closing in southeast Missouri’s New Madrid. House Minority Leader Crystal Quade (D-Springfield) has filed legislation aimed at saving the plant, and U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley (R) has called on President Biden to invoke the federal Defense Production Act, noting 30 percent of the nation’s aluminum is produced at the Bootheel plant. Boone Hospital Center says more residents are choosing Boone for emergency care
Boone Hospital Center’s new chief executive officer says emergency room visits are up nine percent this month at the hospital.
Brady DuBois spoke Sunday morning to 939 the Eagle’s Mike Murphy and Al Germond on the “Columbia Buzz” program. Mr. DuBois tells listeners that the numbers show that more residents are choosing Boone for emergency medical care. He says Boone Hospital Center serves a 26-county area in mid-Missouri and areas extending from the Iowa border to the Lake of the Ozarks.
Mr. Murphy, who publishes Comobuz.com, reports Boone Hospital Center had positive cash flow in two months near the end of 2023 for the first time since its separation from St. Louis-based BJC Healthcare in 2021.
Boone Hospital Center is Columbia/Boone County’s sixth-largest employer, according to 2023 statistics from Columbia Regional Economic Development Incorporated (REDI). REDI says Boone Hospital Center has 1,581 employees.
