Missouri’s Senate President Pro Tem has stripped three fellow Republicans of their committee chairmanships, describing them as “the “Chaos Caucus.” While Republicans have a 24-10 supermajority in the Senate, GOP infighting has led to gridlock in Jefferson City. Senate President Pro Tem Caleb Rowden (R-Columbia) made the announcement during a Tuesday afternoon Statehouse press conference. He’s stripped State Sens. Denny Hoskins (R-Warrensburg), Bill Eigel (R-Weldon Spring) and Andrew Koenig (R-Manchester) from their chairmanships. Senator Rowden joined us live on 939 the Eagle’s “Wake Up Mid-Missouri”, telling listeners that he took action due to years of disrespect toward the Missouri Senate and colleagues. He also says the Freedom Caucus senators have tried to break the Senate. Senator Eigel, who’s seeking Missouri’s GOP gubernatorial nomination in August, has issued a statement to 939 the Eagle, after he was stripped from his chairmanship. Senator Eigel, writes, in part: “Jefferson City is ruled by a uniparty cartel of special interests, RINOS and Democrats, who band together to crush the voice of the people. These are the same tactics the Swamp uses against President Trump.” Senator Hoskins’ district includes Cooper and Howard counties in the 939 the Eagle listening area:
(LISTEN): Columbia’s city manager envisions creation of a housing resource center
Columbia’s city manager says housing is one of the biggest issues our community is facing, particularly affordable housing.
The median home value in Boone County is now about $350,000. City manager De’Carlon Seewood discussed the issue on 939 the Eagle’s “CEO Roundtable.”
“If you listen to the (Columbia) Realtors Association, they’ll tell you it’s just not enough product in our community. And so if there’s not enough high-end housing then you don’t have people moving up, and so then they stay in homes that could be going to affordable housing. And so then that only increases our issues with affordable housing,” Seewood says.
Central Bank of Boone County president Ed Scavone says the median home value in Boone County is now about $350,000. Mr, Scavone says that for years, housing costs were lower in Columbia than in St. Louis and Kansas City. He says that’s not the case now.
The city council voted to approve Mr. Seewood’s proposed new city housing department in September. He updated listeners on the status of the department, during a recent interview on 939 the Eagle’s “CEO Roundtable” program. Mr. Seewood tells host Fred Parry that the department is budgeted and that they’re currently in the process of hiring a department director. Mr. Seewood says the long-term goal is to create a housing resource center to make housing a priority, and to create a place where housing developers and those looking for homes have access to the city.
(LISTEN): Columbia trash collection starting to catch up today after snow, ice and wind chill warnings
Today’s warming temperatures mean Columbia Solid Waste is having their first full day of residential curbside trash collection since Thursday.
Columbia Solid Waste was only able to pick up trash two days last week due to a federal holiday, snowfall and several wind chill warnings. They were unable to do a full day on Monday due to the major ice storm. City of Columbia Utilities spokesman Matt Nestor tells 939 the Eagle that dangerous weather presents a safety issue for department employees:
“Because we’re still in manual collections. We have people riding on the backs of the trucks and it’s not worth risking their health and safety,” Mr. Nestor says.
Columbia Solid Waste could not service all Monday routes yesterday, due to the ice storm. They encourage any customers on a Monday route that wasn’t collected yesterday to leave your trash out. Crews will catch up on those routes in the next few days.
(LISTEN): Missouri Senate Majority Floor Leader Cindy O’Laughlin (R-Shelbina) joins us live on “Wake Up Mid-Missouri”
Northeast Missouri, including Audrain and Randolph counties in the 939 the Eagle listening area, have been hard hit by winter storms, wind chill warnings and Monday’s ice storm. January has been a very tough month in the region, and many schools have been forced to take a number of snow days. Missouri Senate Majority Leader Cindy O’Laughlin (R-Shelbina) represents Audrain and Randolph counties in Jefferson City. She joined us live on 939 the Eagle’s “Wake Up Mid-Missouri,” telling listeners that state Department of Transportation (MoDOT) crews at northeast Missouri sheds have been pulled away to help St. Louis and Kansas City offices during snowstorms. She says while those offices have staffing issues, her constituents in rural Missouri deserve to have their highways plowed in snow. Senator O’Laughlin also discussed her frustration with the Missouri Senate Freedom Caucus, which she calls the “Chaos Caucus.” Leader O’Laughlin says that caucus doesn’t meet with the Senate Republican caucus in Jefferson City. While the GOP has a 24-10 supermajority in the Missouri Senate, Republican infighting has hampered the ability of them to pass priority legislation. Senator O’Laughlin tells listeners that her caucus has filed 12 initiative petition bills, 20 school reform bills and 31 tax reform bills. She also hopes to hear Missouri Governor Mike Parson highlight some of those issues during tomorrow’s State of the State address:
