World Abuse Awareness Day is Thursday June 15. Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft says five-million Americans experience elder abuse each year. Secretary Ashcroft tells 939 the Eagle’s “Wake Up Mid-Missouri” that some seniors are being abused financially and physically. He encourages anyone with information about elder abuse to call the secretary of state’s vulnerable citizens unit hotline number at (855) 653-7300. Missourians are encouraged to wear purple on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day:
(AUDIO): Kehoe touts working-class upbringing in Missouri gubernatorial campaign video
Hundreds of people packed Jefferson City’s Capital Bluffs venue Tuesday evening, as Missouri Lieutenant Governor Mike Kehoe (R) launched his 2024 gubernatorial campaign.
Kehoe has also unveiled a new online video called “Living Proof.”
“I grew up here in north St. Louis City. Growing up, I didn’t have a famous father, or a father at all. He left when I was one, leaving a single mother to raise six kids. There was no entitlement. I did odd jobs around the neighborhood to pay for my high school. I didn’t go to college. I went to work washing cars, here, to earn money so that my siblings and I could help our single mother make ends meet,” Kehoe says in the video.
He also talks in the video about how he turned around mid-Missouri’s Osage Ambulance company.
“Missouri has taught me, no matter what, there is always hope,” Kehoe says in the video.
Kehoe tells his supporters that he’s the only candidate for governor who is ready on day one to make our communities safer, control spending and protect freedoms.
He’s expected to face Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft and State Sen. William Eigel (R-Weldon Spring) in the August 2024 GOP primary. GOP Governor Mike Parson has said this will be his final term. The Missouri Democratic gubernatorial primary will also be in August 2024.
Mike Kehoe served on the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission before being elected to the state Senate in 2010, replacing term-limited State Sen. Carl Vogel (R-Jefferson City). Senator Vogel has since passed away. Kehoe was re-elected to the Senate in 2014, and Governor Parson appointed him as lieutenant governor in 2018 after then-Governor Eric Greitens resigned. Kehoe was elected to a full term as lieutenant governor in 2020, earning more than 58 percent of the vote to beat Democrat Alissia Canady.
(AUDIO): Missouri secretary of state and gubernatorial candidate Jay Ashcroft recaps 2023 session on “Wake Up Mid-Missouri”
Missouri’s GOP secretary of state and gubernatorial candidate Jay Ashcroft says Missourians don’t elect legislators for social media speeches but elect them to enact good policy. He’s disappointed with Friday’s chaos in the Missouri Senate, which featured GOP infighting. Ashcroft blames people putting politics ahead of policy. Secretary Ashcroft delivered a clear rebuke to the GOP-controlled Legislature on “Wake Up Mid-Missouri”. He says despite GOP supermajorities in both chambers, the Legislature did not deliver a parents bill of rights, a big tax cut and initiative petition reform. He says Republicans must stand up to the Democrats, who are outnumbered 111-51 in the House and 24-10 in the Senate:
(AUDIO): Missouri GOP treasurer describes immigrants as faith and family-oriented
The first minority statewide officeholder in Missouri history says half of his donors are first-time GOP donors and that 99 percent of his donors are individuals.
State treasurer Vivek Malek (R) delivered the keynote address at Monday evening’s Boone County Lincoln Days. Mr. Malek was born in India, and arrived in Missouri in 2001 with $300 in his pocket.
“I come from an immigrant background and I’ve helped a lot of immigrants during my 18 years of practice. And when I see them, whatever country or continent they’re coming from, I see the same similarities that I see in our conservative base,” Malek says.
Treasurer Malek describes immigrants as faith and family-oriented, adding that the GOP must do a better job of reaching out to them.
Missouri’s treasurer says his office currently holds $1.3 billion in unclaimed property. Treasurer Malek took the opportunity to encourage the 120-plus audience members at Lincoln Days to check his office’s website for unclaimed property.
“This is your money, that’s when I say I hate and love it. I hate it because I’m still having it, but I love it because I get to return it. Every time we talk about state government, it’s always talking about taking from people and whatever form in taxes and stuff. Here I’m sitting in an office here I like to give back whatever we have. So, this is one of the offices which does that,” Malek tells 939 the Eagle.
You can check treasurer.mo.gov to see if you have unclaimed property. Mr. Malek describes it as Missouri’s largest lost and found. His office returned more than $1.7 million in unclaimed property to Missouri taxpayers in his first three days in office. That’s a state record. The average return is about $300, according to Mr. Malek’s office.
The crowd also heard speeches Monday evening from Missouri gubernatorial candidates Jay Ashcroft, the secretary of state, and Army veteran Chris Wright of Joplin. Secretary Ashcroft criticized the actions of some librarians, saying they think they know better than parents. He also touted voter ID. Mr. Wright discussed the issue of human trafficking in Missouri and nationwide.
Secretary of state candidate Shane Schoeller, the Greene County clerk, attorney general candidate Will Scharf and former Columbia mayoral candidate Randy Minchew also spoke. Mr. Minchew tells the audience he’s seriously considering a bid for the Missouri Senate seat currently held by Senate Majority Leader Caleb Rowden (R-Columbia). Rowden, who’s term-limited, leaves office in December 2024.
Former State Rep. Chuck Basye (R-Columbia) received an award from the Columbia and Boone County Pachyderms.
Malek and Ashcroft to be featured at tonight’s Boone County Lincoln Days
Boone County GOP officials say about 120 people are expected at tonight’s (Monday) Boone County Lincoln Days banquet in Columbia.
State treasurer Vivek Malek will be the keynote speaker, and Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft will be the special guest speaker. Secretary Ashcroft is running for governor. State Rep. Cheri Toalson Reinsch (R-Hallsville) will also speak.
Protecting the state senate seat currently held by Missouri’s Senate President Pro Tem is a top priority for Boone County Republicans.
Senate President Pro Tem Caleb Rowden (R-Columbia) is term-limited. Republicans have held that seat for 15 years. Picking up the seat is a top priority for Missouri Democrats, and former State Rep. Stephen Webber (D-Columbia) is running for the seat. The district is now a Boone County-only seat, which could make it tougher for Republicans to win. GOP stronghold Cooper County is no longer in the senatorial district.
Boone County GOP women also plan to honor former State Rep. Ed Robb’s (R-Columbia) wife this evening. Robb, who also served as Boone County’s presiding commissioner, died in 2011.
“Wake Up Mid-Missouri” host Branden Rathert will be tonight’s emcee. The social hour at Stoney Creek Inn begins at 5, with dinner at 6 and the program starting at 6:30.
