Commerce bank one for one food drive with Zimmer Communications in mid-Missouri has raised at least $65,000

December 15, 2022 By Brian Hauswirth

While final numbers are still being calculated, Wednesday’s 16th annual Commerce Bank one for one food drive with Zimmer Communications has raised more than $65,000. That word from Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri president Lindsay Lopez, who spoke to 939 the Eagle this morning in-studio. Additional donations are still being tabulated.

The food bank serves 32 counties, including Boone, Cole and Callaway counties and virtually all of the counties in the 939 the Eagle listening area. Ms. Lopez says the food bank is now spending three times more on food than pre-pandemic.

Zimmer Communications was live Wednesday from 6 am to 6 pm at Columbia Mall and at the Buchheit on Jefferson City’s Missouri Boulevard. Ms. Lopez says residents also donated five thousand pounds of food.

“We’ve seen just steady traffic and the generosity of this community just like every year continues to amaze me,” Lopez says.

Lopez is thanking you for your generosity, saying one in seven Missourians are experiencing food insecurity.

“So we’re serving on average 15,000 more people each month than we were compared with 2021. And so you can see that, you know, lots and lots of need out there. Our expenses are three times what they once were. Food prices and gas, other transportation costs,” she says.

Lopez says Boone County continues to see increasing hunger needs. She says more than 3,700 Boone County families who didn’t receive assistance in 2021 needed help this year.

The Democratic nominee for Boone County presiding commissioner describes Columbia Regional Airport’s (COU) $23-million new terminal as a game-changer for the region.

Former State Rep. Kip Kendrick (D-Columbia) tells 939 the Eagle that Columbia, Boone County, Jefferson City and mid-Missouri will all benefit.

“It is also the visitors that we’re going to get in, businesses we’re going to be able to recruit. The colleges will be able to compete better,” Kendrick says.

Kendrick says Mizzou, Columbia College, Stephens College and Moberly Area Community College will all benefit.

Mr. Kendrick also praises the partnerships that led to the new terminal’s completion.

“You know it wasn’t any one entity, it wasn’t any one municipality, it wasn’t any one county. It was the state, it was the federal government, it was local governments,” says Kendrick.

The first flight at COU’s new terminal is Wednesday.

Mr. Kendrick faces GOP nominee Connie Leipard in the November general election for Boone County presiding commissioner. The winner will replace outgoing presiding commissioner Dan Atwill, who decided against a re-election bid.

TopTracer Range will be building its second Missouri location just west of Columbia, at Midway Golf and Games.

A groundbreaking event for the multi-million dollar facility is set for 4:30 this (Wednesday) afternoon at Midway Golf and Games, which is visible from I-70.

TopTracer is owned by Top Golf, and they’re planning to build a 16,000 square feet facility that will include 18 to 20 elevated bays. Each bay can accommodate four to six golfers at a time.

A restaurant and a bar and grill are also planned.

TopTracer says the new facility will give people of all skill levels the chance to enjoy golf. The facility’s technology is aimed at giving you the opportunity to play hundreds of golf courses around the world, without leaving Boone County. It will be similar to the popular Top Golf in Chesterfield.

939 the Eagle’s Fred Parry reports the local owners include Tim and Toby Rost, the owners of Rost Landscaping and Superior Garden Center.

American Red Cross has volunteers from central Missouri in Puerto Rico and Alaska

September 23, 2022 By Brian Hauswirth

Two mid-Missouri men are among the numerous American Red Cross volunteers providing disaster assistance and critical aid to storm victims in Alaska and Puerto Rico.

American Red Cross of Missouri and Arkansas spokesman Joe Zydlo tells 939 the Eagle that a male Red Cross volunteer from Boone County is helping in Alaska after Typhoon Merbok, while a Red Cross male volunteer from Pulaski County is in Puerto Rico. The Red Cross cannot release the names of the volunteers nor the cities they live in, for legal reasons.

Typhoon Merbok has flooded homes and airport runways, and winter’s freezing temperatures are fast approaching. The “Anchorage Daily News” reports Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy has submitted a request for a federal disaster declaration for Western Alaska. The newspaper reports the typhoon damaged a 1,000 mile stretch of coast.

Meantime, Hurricane Fiona knocked power out to all of Puerto Rico. The Associated Press reports President Joe Biden says the full force of the federal government is ready to help Puerto Rico recover from the devastation of the hurricane.

The American Red Cross of Missouri and Arkansas responds to fires, floods, blizzards and hurricanes too. They aim to fulfill the American Red Cross mission to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies.
