Columbia-based MU Health Care and longtime Jefferson City affiliate Capital Region Medical Center plan to fully integrate the two organizations into an integrated academic health care system. They are currently two separate corporations. University of Missouri vice chancellor for health affairs Nim Chinniah and Capital Region Medical Center’s Gaspare Calvaruso joined us live in-studio on 939 the Eagle’s “Wake Up Mid-Missouri.” Mr. Chinniah tells listeners that community hospitals are struggling in Missouri, and this ensures that care remains high-quality and is sustainable. He notes MU Health Care has opened clinics in Mexico, Fulton and Boonville, rural mid-Missouri towns that have seen their hospitals close:
Mizzou’s graduation ceremonies begin this afternoon and continue all weekend; thousands of visitors in town
You can expect heavy traffic and long waits at popular restaurants all weekend in Columbia due to Mizzou’s graduation ceremonies, which begin this afternoon.
Some of the more popular restaurants like Shakespeare’s, Harpo’s and Shiloh are normally extra-crowded on graduation weekend.
The University of Missouri says more than 6,000 students will graduate this weekend, earning more than 6,600 degrees. Some students have earned more than one degree.
Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) director Amy Schneider tells 939 the Eagle that they have some hotel rooms available for tonight and tomorrow night, but very few. Some people will have to drive to Jefferson City or Boonville for hotel rooms.
McDonald’s restaurants across mid-Missouri offering a free beverage to teachers today
Mid-Missouri teachers can enjoy a free beverage today at their area McDonald’s drive-thru, as part of national teacher appreciation day.
McDonald’s restaurants in Columbia, Jefferson City, Ashland, Fulton, Boonville, Moberly, California and much of mid-Missouri are offering one any size soft drink, sweet tea or coffee to any teacher with a valid educator ID.
Local McDonald’s owner Mark Mehle says the restaurant has a long history of recognizing teachers as a key part of our communities.
No purchase is necessary. The offer is valid at participating McDonald’s while supplies last.
(AUDIO): Mid-Missouri foster children and families to benefit from tonight’s fundraiser in Boonville
Officials from the Central Missouri Foster Care and Adoption Association (CMFCAA) are encouraging you to come out for tonight’s “Stomp Out Abuse” fundraiser at Boonville’s Cooper Ridge.
CMFCAA spokesman Gerry Tritz tells 939 the Eagle that there are about 500 children in foster care in Boone County.
“Come on out. And you’ll be helping foster kids and you’ll have a great time while doing it,” Tritz says.
This evening’s event is from 5:30 to 8 at Cooper’s Ridge. It includes a country-style buffet, a cash bar, music and a silent auction. There will also be miniature ponies. Mr. Tritz says the organization’s aim is leading foster children toward safety and permanency, ultimately to a forever home.
The CMFCAA is a one-stop shop for foster, adoptive and kinship families.
“These are kids who have had it rough. They’ve had a tough childhood. Like I’ve said, they’ve faced abuse or neglect and they’ve further been traumatized by being taken away from their biological parents,” says Tritz.
The cost of tonight’s event is $25. Cooper’s Ridge is just north of I-70 in Boonville.
UPDATE: MU Health Care formally opens its largest clinic outside of Columbia in Boonville
MU Health Care executives say the new Boonville medical building provides a new model of care, all in one location.
Boonville and Cooper County dignitaries joined MU Health Care leaders for Tuesday’s formal grand opening. The new 14,000 square foot facility includes an urgent care, primary care providers, a lab and physical therapy.
MU Health Care leaders emphasize that the new facility would not have been possible without the collective effort of community partners who worked alongside them throughout the project.
A longtime Boonville resident is one of the new family doctors at MU Health Care’s new Boonville Jackson road medical building. Dr. Mona Brownfield has lived in Boonville since 1979. She participated in Tuesday’s ceremony.
The new facility is MU Health Care’s largest clinic outside of Columbia.
