Columbia Police and city manager De’Carlon Seewood say nine of Columbia’s 11 homicides in 2022 involved domestic violence. Columbia’s latest homicide also involved domestic violence. 27-year-old John Williamson III is charged with first degree murder for the weekend killing of his ex-girlfriend Azairah Brownlee, who was shot to death in a street. Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey tells 939 the Eagle’s “Wake Up Mid-Missouri” that domestic violence victims often end up being killed. General Bailey tells listeners that police must investigate domestic violence cases and that that prosecutors must charge the suspects and keep them behind bars. Another topic that came on during our “Wake Up” interview is the recent call from the Mizzou Democratic Socialists of America for Columbia’s city council to approve a sanctuary city ordinance to protect its LGBTQ citizens. Columbia spokeswoman Sydney Olsen tells 939 the Eagle that Columbia’s legal department and the city’s Commission on Human Rights are currently reviewing that request and a similar one from another Columbia resident. General Bailey says he will not let what he calls progressive city leaders undermine state statute, saying state law preempts local control:
(LISTEN): Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey discusses Gardner report and abortion issues on “Wake Up Mid-Missouri”
Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey (R) says the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s office is a law enforcement agency first, an agency that he says must be primarily concerned with preserving public safety. General Bailey joined us live this morning on 939 the Eagle’s “Wake Up Mid-Missouri” to discuss his office’s release of the Kim Gardner report. The attorney general pushed for her ouster, before she resigned in May. General Bailey tells listeners that Ms. Gardner turned control of St. Louis streets to criminals and that there were 4,000 police reports sitting on a desk that Gardner never touched. He says that with new Circuit Attorney Gabe Gore, the warrant office closed under Gardner has now re-opened. Attorney General Bailey also discussed the abortion issue on the program:
Columbia murderer to be sentenced this morning
A Columbia man who admits shooting his stepfather to death in 2022 will learn his fate this morning at the Boone County Courthouse.
Judge Joshua Calvin Devine has scheduled a 9 am sentencing hearing for 23-year-old Samuel Brotherton, who pleaded guilty in August to second degree murder and armed criminal action for discharging a weapon while intoxicated.
Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey filed the amended charges against Brotherton in August, from first to second degree murder. The attorney general says he consulted with victim Rollin Thompson’s family and with Boone County prosecutors. General Bailey says Brotherton killed his stepfather after a March 2022 argument at a home on Columbia’s Pinecrest drive, near Blue Ridge elementary school.
Bailey says the 64-year-old Thompson, who was unarmed, was shot while hiding behind a closed, locked bedroom door. The attorney general says his office is committed to obtaining justice for victims of heinous crimes.
The primary difference between first and second degree murder in Missouri is that those convicted of second degree murder are eligible for parole after serving 85 percent of their sentence. Those convicted of first degree murder are not eligible for parole.

Missouri’s attorney general files lawsuit against Dollar General for alleged deceptive and unfair prices
Missouri’s attorney general is blasting Dollar General stores across the Show-Me State, alleging that they advertise one price at the shelf and charge a higher price at the register upon checkout.
Attorney General Andrew Bailey filed a lawsuit on Wednesday against Tennessee-based Dollar General, citing alleged deceptive and unfair prices in its more than 600 Missouri stores. Bailey is blasting the company, saying that prices are at an all-time high and that the last thing Missourians need “is to feel the brunt of Dollar General’s scheme.”
Bailey says his office conducted the joint investigation with the Missouri Department of Agriculture’s Weights and Measures division, which handles surveilling, weighing and measuring devices such as store price scanners.
The attorney general alleges that Dollar General violated the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act. General Bailey encourages Missourians who have been overcharged by any retail store to file a complaint with his office by calling Missouri’s Consumer Protection hotline at 1-800-392-8222.
Dollar General has had major growth across Missouri, including numerous mid-Missouri stores. The company’s website says it’s proud to be America’s neighborhood general store. Dollar General’s national website says that their actions “are guided by a simple mission: serving others.”
