Columbia’s outgoing mayor pro tem recognized by colleagues; city council to meet Monday on replacement
Columbia’s city council recognized outgoing mayor pro tem and second ward city councilwoman Andrea Waner at last night’s meeting. They also heard a two-page report about the eight applicants to replace her on the council.
Councilwoman Waner will resign her seat tomorrow (Wednesday) because she’s moving to a new home outside her ward. Waner’s term expires in April. She announced this year that she wouldn’t be seeking re-election in 2024, to focus on her health after being diagnosed with eye cancer.
Eight candidates have applied to fill the remaining four months of her term. Those eight are Susan Renee Carter, Rachel Proffitt, Lisa Evelyn Anne Meyer, William Moyes, Cornelia Williams, Frederick Saffold, Robert Schreiber and Lucio Bitoy IV.
Columbia’s city council will hold a special meeting Monday evening at 5. City spokeswoman Sydney Olsen tells 939 the Eagle that they’ll appoint someone to the position at that time.
UPDATE: Power restored for all Columbia residents
Columbia Water and Light crews have restored power to about 1,500 residents, including 141 residents who live near West Broadway and Fairview.
Columbia Utilities spokesman Matt Nestor tells 939 the Eagle that equipment failure is to blame for the power outage, which impacted residents in several areas of the city. They include the Business Loop, an area around Columbia Country Club, Scott Boulevard and an area near I-70 and Highway 63. Bob Evans, Steak ‘n Shake and Breaktime all lost power near I-70.
The power outage began at about 1 am.

(LISTEN): Columbia home improvement store and Toys for Tots collecting toys for needy children
Columbia’s Menards home improvement store on Vandiver is teaming up with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves’ Toys for Tots program to collect new toys for underprivileged children in our community.
Columbia Menards general manager Obi Agusiobo says the collection box is available at the store through November 30.
“We have a box near the exit doors and we’re collecting new and unwrapped toys for the less fortunate kids in our community,” Agusiobo says.
Mr. Agusiobo describes Toys for Tots as a wonderful program. All of the toys and presents that are collected will be distributed by a non-profit organization in the Columbia area. Mid-Missouri’s less fortunate children will be surprised with a new toy on Christmas morning, thanks to the generosity of shoppers and employees at the Menards. Mr. Agusiobo tells 939 the Eagle that his employees have also been purchasing toys for the collection box.
“Our team members as well that work here, you know some of us have kids and some of us have nieces and nephews. So we all understand what a joy it brings to a child to have a brand-new toy to unwrap this holiday,” Mr. Agusiobo says.
All of the presents will be distributed before Christmas morning.
