Missouri House Veterans Committee chairman Rep. Dave Griffith (R-Jefferson City) has filed legislation tasking the Missouri Veterans Commission with expanding its efforts to prevent veteran suicide. The bill was heard in committee this week. Chairman Griffith tells 939 the Eagle’s “Wake Up Mid-Missouri” that the bill is needed to address Missouri’s high veteran suicide numbers. Chairman Griffith, an ally of GOP Governor Mike Parson, says he’s disappointed the governor’s proposed budget didn’t include $27-million in extra funding for the 988 number. The 988 number is the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Griffith also praises Missouri House Speaker Dean Plocher (R-Des Peres) for the pace of the session this year. Griffith says things are moving quicker than in past years:
Jefferson City’s original Daisy Delight restaurant is for sale
Multiple generations have enjoyed dining and getting ice cream at Jefferson City’s popular Daisy Delight since it opened on East McCarty in 1955. While the business is still thriving, owner Jerry Bartel tells 939 the Eagle that Daisy Delight is for sale, due to his age. He emphasizes that it’s not closing.
“I’m 77 years old and I just need to retire is what I need to do. And I’d like to find a family or families that would buy the restaurant and take over running it so that it continues to be a family tradition,” Bartel says.
He says Greg Bowman of Bowman Realty is his broker, adding that several people are interested. Bartel wants Daisy Delight to remain a family restaurant, noting it’s been family-owned since it opened 68 years ago. Mr. Bartel says the business is thriving.
“It’s never had a down year in the last 11 years or 12 years. It’s had an increase every year in sales. It’s a thriving, strong business,” says Bartel.
Daisy Delight is known for its ice cream, banana splits, burgers and fried mushrooms. Jerry’s wife, Jana, is the general manager and worked behind the counter. Restaurant patrons know her as Miss Daisy. The restaurant’s Pac-Man video game has been in the same spot since about 1981.
The restaurant is also a popular spot for baseball teams that play in the Jefferson City area each summer. It’s also been a spot for state lawmakers to relax and enjoy ice cream.

Crews from Columbia-based construction company working around-the-clock at massive Kansas battery plant site
A Columbia construction company is currently doing grading work at the future site of the multi-billion dollar Panasonic Energy EV battery plant in Kansas.
The $4-billion factory will be located in De Soto, Kansas, near Lenexa. Columbia-based Emery Sapp and Sons has been awarded a major contract for site preparation.
“Right now we’re doing all the grading work. Very fast schedule. We have, we’re running three shifts a day, so night and day around the clock,” Emery Sapp and Sons vice president Brian Burks says.
Panasonic says the project will make Kansas and the Kansas City region a key player in the domestic electric vehicle industry.
“Do the excavation and grading, get site level and then do all the utilities and pavements, so we can take it from road to front step,” Burks tells 939 the Eagle’s “CEO Roundtable.”
The plant site is about 30 miles from Kansas City. Panasonic predicts that the new plant in De Soto will add critical capacity to the domestic EV battery supply chain.
