Former State Rep. Kip Kendrick (D-Columbia) will be Boone County’s next presiding commissioner. Mr. Kendrick defeated businesswoman Connie Leipard by about 8,000 votes in Tuesday’s election. It was a clean campaign. Kendrick joined us live on 939 the Eagle’s “Wake Up Mid-Missouri,” telling listeners that Connie is a good person who ran for the right reasons. He’s looking forward to serving as presiding commissioner, emphasizing the importance of listening, bipartisanship and cooperation on major projects like the I-70 Rocheport bridge west of Columbia:
UPDATE: Columbia Police warn about prowler; residents urged to keep exterior lights on
Columbia Police are urging you to lock your doors and windows and to turn on exterior lights, as they say a suspected prowler’s activity may be escalating.
His first incident happened at the Aria apartments near Highway 63 and Grindstone on August 9, when the burglar entered the apartment of a woman while she was home. Click here to see video of the suspect from that incident. CPD says he became frightened and left.
Columbia Police now say the same suspect likely tried to gain entry into numerous other apartments at the same complex: all of the residents were females who lived alone. There have also been similar incidents at an apartment complex on Old Highway 63 south, and police say another incident happened Sunday night on south Columbia’s Buttonwood when the prowler chased a female resident to her door. She was able to reach safety and call 911.
Columbia Police have worked with a victim and a professional sketch artist for the rendering in this story. CPD says the suspect may have light facial hair or a shaved face. His hair is described as balding, although he’s been known to wear a hat. Authorities describe the suspect as a light-skinned African-American or Hispanic male, about five feet nine to six feet tall with a slim athletic build.
CPD is not releasing some details of the cases out of respect to the victims and to assist investigators in solving this case. Anyone with information about the suspect should call CrimeStoppers at (573) 875-TIPS.

Influential Missouri House committee chairman heading to state Senate
A veteran mid-Missouri lawmaker who chairs the House Fiscal Review Committee has been elected to the state Senate.
State Rep. Travis Fitzwater (R-Holts Summit) earned 78 percent of the vote on Tuesday, beating Libertarian Catherine Dreher by about 30,000 votes. No Democrat filed in the heavily-Republican district. Fitzwater’s campaign focused on similar issues raised by U.S. Sen.-Elect Eric Schmitt.
“I think they want us to protect the police, take care of kids, grow our economy, grow our state,” Fitzwater says.
He will represent a new five-county Senate district that includes Callaway, Montgomery, Pike, Lincoln and St. Charles counties. Fitzwater tells 939 the Eagle he has three priorities in the Senate.
“We’ve got to protect kids, we got to fight for our freedoms and we’ve got to grow our economy. And I think those are the three tenants we’ll live by as a state senator,” says Fitzwater.
Fitzwater also wants to focus on Missouri’s 14,000 foster children, saying they need loving homes. He’ll replace term-limited State Sen. Jeanie Riddle (R-Mokane).
Missouri’s 2023 session will begin in early January in Jefferson City.
